Pickup
Assemblies are
the heart of a guitar's sound. They are the easiest way to
transform your guitar. Pickups and other components
are
assembled on the pickguard and wired, a balanced system, for easy
installation with 8 screws and 2 wires.
These assemblies have 3
pickup voicings. Tapped
coils have been
around forever in general electrical use. When I was
repairing guitars in the 70’s, I was constantly
asked to rewind pickups hotter. But some people wanted to
also keep the bright sound. So when I started building pickup
assemblies, the pickups were all tapped. 3 switches, off in
the middle, bright one way, hot the other. This worked well,
but I often felt only 2 taps were a compromise.
Now I have evolved this to an even more versatile and simpler to
use system. There are 3 taps, and a simpler way to
use them. Why 3 taps? I think of it like
this: The middle tap is “just
right”. I set the amp for this. And, as
we all know, there are always times in music for
“more”, and “less”.
On a
switch. Changes the whole texture and tone.
Polepieces are large diameter steel, magnets are ceramic. Pickups have covers. There is a brass
grounding plate, no soldering to the back of pots, and all small
components are hand wired on an eyelet board.
The first of the 4 switches is a 3-position tap switch, works on all 3
pickups. The other 3 switches are on-off for each
pickup. Simpler to use and far more versatile. The
lead pickup is wound hotter for
balance. The
volume and tone controls are modified for even tone and taper, and a
bit of boost when all the way up, like they "go to 11". The
tone control affects a
narrower band, that is different on all 3 taps. Gives a good
midrange “awk”, without hunting for a
spot. Does all commonly used sounds, and it’s own
voice.
Do it all with one guitar.
